Rebel MLA Asish Das may shake hand with Trinamool Congress

Agartala, Oct 4: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Asish Das, a key member of Tripura BJP’s dissident faction, on October 4, 2021 finally revealed that he went to Kolkata with the motive to join Trinamool Congress. In all likelihood, Das will officially join the Mamata Banerjee led party on October 6, the next day after a meeting with TMC top rank and file at Kalighat on Tuesday.

Das made all his options closed in the BJP as he reached the point of no return while spearheading a revolt against Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb. As an MLA, Das failed miserably to make any difference in his Assembly constituency Surma. After the BJP came to power in 2018, Das was considered to be one of the promising legislators of the Bharatiya Janata Party but in the last three- and-half-years, Das has been seen ruling the media headlines only by criticizing the ruling dispensation.

The BJP sources said that he was longing for a post in the state cabinet as an SC minister. People of his Assembly constituency and the BJP workers gradually lifted their support behind Das after they saw Das’s political ambitions were counterproductive for his own people. “He is the most unpopular MLA of the party. For the last two years he never ever visited his constituency for once to inquire after the people who elected him. Now, he is set to betray the party that gave him tickets to contest the polls for the first time”, said a source.

In a video that went viral in the social media platforms, he was heard lauding Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and describing her victory in the by-polls as a prelude to Mamata rising to new heights in the national politics.

He said, “I am a Bengali and I feel proud to see a Bengali is taking the centre stage of national politics. In post-independence India, Bengalis were never given the desired respect considering Bengal’s contribution in the freedom struggle”. Das left for Kolkata two days back and he was spotted at the Trinamool Congress office. Although he did not clearly mention anything, his statement indicated that he very much played into the hands of TMC and an official declaration was awaited.
